Tired of Couple-Centric Rules? Let’s Talk Polyamorous & Bisexual Visibility

So often, the swinger and non-monogamous scenes still orbit around hetero couple privilege—even when we claim to be open-minded. If you’re a polyamorous bisexual who doesn’t fit the tidy “man + woman seeking same” box, you’ve probably felt that friction. The assumption that you’re just there to spice up someone’s marriage, or that your bisexuality is a performance for a partner, gets old fast. It’s not about shaming couples who play together—there’s nothing wrong with that dynamic when it’s genuine. But when the entire community architecture caters to that as the default, it can erase solo poly folks, bi folks dating independently, or triads that don’t center a primary pair. We need more spaces and conversations that acknowledge the full spectrum of non-monogamy without constantly recentering “the couple” as the basic unit of everything. Part of breaking past those norms is just showing up and being visible. The more we talk about our different structures, the less others can pretend they don’t exist or that we’re just “going through a phase.” Bisexual visibility within non-monogamy still gets sidelined by both straight and gay communities, so it’s on us to claim that space. Have you ever felt like your relationship style or bisexuality didn’t fit the assumed mold in swinger or poly spaces? How do you push back without feeling like you’re constantly explaining yourself?
